Today was a normal day for me. When I got off the bus, I went walking to Ideal Surplus. I changed into work clothes so I wouldn't get my dress clothes dirty. Gary gave me a list of item I had to put pictures for. The list was quite easy to do and I finished in about an hour. After I finished the list, Gary gave me another list to work on. I worked on the list until lunch.   I ate lunch with Osmara and Enrique. After lunch, Frank wanted to talk to me and Osmara. After the meeting, Osmara asked me to come up with 4 new blog topics for the interns. When I got back to Surplus, I came up with four topics and emailed them to Osmara, so she could of checked them. I continued to work on the list until 3:30 p.m. Osmara didn't like one of my ideas and I had to think of a new one. My day was pretty good today.   Who's my role model in my family or group of friends. I think it's between my sister or my mother. My mom is an perfect example of a hard working person. She works so

Who Is Your Role Model In Your Family or Friend Group?

Enrique Cordero           09/28/2015           Monday Who Is Your Role Model ?             My family has never really been my role model for the past couple of years and I haven't looked up to my friends in that manner in a very long time. I have only ever looked up to a couple of people such as a couple of teachers, authors, and inspirational people that I have come to be grateful for. Dean Simmer, God/Jesus Christ, and Satoshi Tajiri (along with everyone at Nintendo/Game Freak/Creatures Inc.) have all been the main role models for me so far.             Dean Simmer has been an amazing person to me and being a great counselor. Dean Has helped me figure out what I need to improve on so that I will get better scores on the standardized tests. He has made me see that my life can be worth much more than average because I am trying to make it. The reason I am going to a better college is because of him. Jesus Christ is one of my models because he is my savior &am

GM Cares Week - Jacqueline Perez

Jacqueline Perez September 18, 2015 GM Cares Week Friday The improvement in the Southwest Detroit community has improved significantly by the works of GM. They have been painting schools, cleaning the streets, painting out graffiti and overall helping the community. They have set an example for neighbors on keeping the community looking nice. I was able to take part in this event on Friday, my work day. I was a garden leader at Cadillac Urban Gardens. I was able to lead a group of over twenty GM employees. I didn’t know I was going to be alone in the garden leading the whole group, so I was a bit nervous. I lead the group  and accomplished lots of things successfully. I spoke to the volunteers during lunch and after lunch many of them complimented me on my small speech and my leadership in the garden. I’m glad I was trusted with the responsibility of keeping them busy and working with people much older than I. I learned about the employee’s professions, so I could learn

Ideal Setech                   Today was my first day working with the Setech department in the Ideal Group. I worked under Jesse, and he began to explain to me his expectations of my education under Setech. He introduced some new topics to me, like writing processes, completing root analysis forms, navigating SSQ, and working with flow charts.                              After we talked, I took notes on a project he wanted me to work on, which was creating a flow chart. My understanding was that since Setech provides and manages parts in machines in other companies, we needed to know processes to fix and maintain those machines. For that to work properly and efficiently, the worker has to know how to fix or look for the problem in the machine. This is where flow charts help because looking for a certain part, fixing that part, and then preventing that problem to happen again are all tedious tasks people should be able to reference if they forget or do incorrectly.

Today was a pretty smooth day. I started my day by working one of my old tasks. I had to ask Chris how to do it because I didn't quite remember how to do it. I sat at Jose' desk and worked on my task. I had to put the alias number on MAS and get the items code, condition, and the location of the item. I had to do 4 pages of items. I put them on an Excel sheet and when I finished, I sent it to Chris. I talked to Pamela about college and how it was for her. After our conversation, I went to lunch.   I had lunch with Enrique and we talked about school. After lunch, I went back to Surplus. I had to organize a pile of papers in order and I had to file them. It took me about an hour to do. During the day, Frank came to talk to me about me transferring high schools. He gave me a lot to think about and I need to give him a decision by midnight. After our discussion, I went back to my desk to write my blog. I had a lot of things happen and I need to make a decision.   This year, I

What Do I Like Most About Detroit Cristo Rey High School

Enrique Cordero 09-24-2015                  Detroit Cristo Rey High School has been a really great place that I won't forget through out my life. The School has been a great place to learn about the work environment, both outside and inside work. It has helped me find paid internships where I could have experiences I never thought I would have until I was in my 20's. Because of the school I have found amazing work partners and I have even spoken with a successful entrepreneur who has given me priceless life advise. The school has opened my eyes to what I want to become and has further developed my understanding of my own future.            My understanding has developed for work and also further with school. The college readiness course, having only gone to it for a couple of weeks, has made me realize that I really need to study for the ACT's and SAT's. It has also given me the task of colleges I would love to go to, otherwise I wouldn't have looked at a

Christian Perales September 22, 2015 If I could suggest an attraction for southwest Detroit, what would it be? If I could suggest an attraction for southwest Detroit, it would be the renovation of the Michigan Central station. The reasoning for this choice of an attraction, is because the Michigan Central station is a very beautiful building, and the building is a piece of art itself.  If the building is fixed up, then many people would want to see it and marvel at the amazing architecture and size of the building. Many times, people of Southwest Detroit have heard the there are people out to fix up the building, though it is never done. If the building  is fixed  up, and made to be like it was decades ago, the number of tourists would increase a large amount. If the number of tourists increase in the Detroit area, then the more people would begin to take pride in and care for their city.

GM Cares Week! by Richard Zarate

Today I had a good day, I volunteered at GM Cares Week. When I got here, I changed clothes and went to Scarcyny Park. I introduced myself to some people. Sarah talked about the tasks we had and safety precautions. We were split into groups and I was leading a group with Dawn. We went to Detroit Cristo Rey to paint a hallway. I painted a wall with a friend, after we painted the wall, we repainted other walls because there were some spots of the old color. After we painted some of the hallway, we went back to Scarcyny Park for lunch.   After lunch, I was told to give a speech about what I think GM Cares Week is about.I said that GM Cares Week at Junction is mostly about safety. We help clean a major street that so many schools are around. Kids can finally walk on the sidewalk and not on the streets when they go under the viaducts. After my speech, we heard other peoples' opinion about GM Cares Week. We went back to Cristo Rey to paint some more. We painted mostly the hallway to th

Christian Perales September 15, 2015 What is your Ideal vision of Southwest Detroit? My Ideal vision of Southwest Detroit, is to see people take pride in the city. To see more art, rather than graffiti. To see more trash cans being used, rather than trash being thrown around. To hear good things about the city, rather than bad stories and make believe rumors. I want to turn on the TV in the morning and hear good news and what good things people in the city are doing, rather than murders, robberies and vandalism. I want to see the future of Detroit graduate and succeed, rather than dropout or throw their life away.I want to see people come together and help each other, rather than bring violence and hatred.  My Ideal vision of Southwest Detroit is for people to see what I see. What I see is potential, what I see is greatness, what I see is, a place full of people who have the potential for greatness.

Christian Perales September 14, 2015 If I could go anywhere to help my community, where would I go If I could go anywhere to help a community, I would go to one of the many suffering countries in Africa. As an American citizen, I know that at some point in my life, I have taken for granted the blessings I have as a citizen. Not everybody has a bed to sleep in, clean water to drink, food to eat, a good job and so on. Since so many people living in America take all of these gifts for granted, we don't always think of what we could be doing to help those who don't have what we have.  The people who live in Africa did nothing wrong, we are all human, and we all have the right to a good life. If you have the ability to help, no body is holding you back from it.

First Work Day! by Richard Zarate

Last week, I had to miss my work day because of my consultation. It feels good to be back. This year, I'll be interning at Ideal Surplus. Today, Chris had me work on MAS. I had to work with some of the items I cycle counted during the summer. I had to use the alias number to find the item number and put it on an excel spreadsheet. Chris taught me how to do it and then I worked on it.  While I was working, the mouse on the laptop froze. I didn't want to reset my computer, so I went to the main building to get a mouse. When I went to go get the mouse, I said hi to Amanda. By the time I got back to Surplus, it was time for lunch. I had lunch with the new Ideal intern, Enrique. After lunch, I went back to Surplus. I continued to work on Mas. My day overall was great, can't wait for next week.

As a Resident of Southwest Detroit all my life, I have grown up to knowing what people have to say about Detroit. To be honest it's not always the most positive thing, or opinion that is spread around about the city I've grown up in, and continue to grow in. I was always annoyed about the subtle hints people would drop about their disliking of Detroit. Many of their opinions were strongly subjective and only based off of what they wanted to believe.  Companies like Ideal Group, General Motors, Magna, etc, play a big role in reversing the common opinion about Detroit. These companies have workers who volunteer out of their own time to help make sure Detroit a better and safer place. I had a part in creating a power point with the railroads in Southwest Detroit, and to show the improvement that was made after GM cares week. Though, we did not only look at the railroads in Southwest Detroit, but also a few in Dearborn, and the difference that I saw was not too surprising. I k

Enrique Cordero 09/03/15                                                                                                              First Week of School             This school year I wanted to take a bigger step into my school year than last. Every school year I have tried harder and harder to improve myself both emotionally and intellectual. I wanted to make myself more driven this year. I want to get into a great computer programming/video game design school so in order to do so I need to keep getting as high grades a possible. I talked to Mr. Simmer, the collage readiness teacher, about my grades and what I would like to do. He told me I should not think of an average or an ordinary  college  that my friends will go to and think of going bigger because of my grade point average. So I am thinking I want to go to Carnegie Mellon University in Pennsylvania. Besides knowing where I might want to go to school the teachers automatically started to give out home work at sch

First day of work as a sophomore Today was my first day of work at Ideal Group, and I am pleased to say that it went very well. Once I got off of the bus for work and entered Ideal, I knew I was in for a great experience. My workday started off with constructing my vision statement and taking a tour of the job site. I met many of the workers and I saw how nice and welcoming they were, which gave me a good feeling about my new job assignment. After the tour, I helped Alex with mailing orders and entering names into the system. After I was finished with that, I went with Alex and Sylvia to take pictures of the railroads and take notes in preparation for GM cares week. When I got back to Ideal, I began working on a power point for GM cares week. First Week of School as a Sophomore My first week of school as a sophomore went better than I expected. I saw that many of the teachers look at my classmates and me as role models for the new freshmen, and saw that we had become
